Housing in Haiti

The 2021 earthquake in Les Cayes, Haiti damaged or destroyed nearly 140,000 homes. Though earthquakes can cause significant damage, the reality is that poorly constructed homes are more often the reason for a loss of life.

To respond to the need for well-trained construction workers who understand appropriate building practices, Lakou was founded to offer a comprehensive commercial construction apprenticeship program in Les Cayes, Haiti.  Participants in the program learn a diverse set of skills including basic education, self-sustainability through meaningful employment, community building and a career in construction.

Msaada was recently asked to assist Lakou with the development of three residential designs - a 3, 4 and 6 bedroom version. When built, these homes will provide training for students during construction as well as earthquake resistant housing for the buyer.
