Metro Jesus School

Foret-des-pins, Haiti

Rock buildings with a crosswalk surrounded by lush trees and plant life

Consisting of 6 classrooms, administrative offices and latrines, the buildings were built with the ‘Dhajji’ construction system. This earthquake resistant system employs large quantities of stone in the walls and foundation. Stone is a locally available material, the use of which allowed the community to benefit from the construction and reduce the cost of transportation. Due to the distance from a good water source, rain water collection from many of the roof surfaces is directed to an in-ground water cistern which provides water to the classrooms and for the general use of the community.
