Peace House Academy

Arusha, Tanzania

The lack of quality education in Tanzania is recognized as one of the nation’s most pressing concerns. Public schools in Tanzania are understaffed, underfunded and not available to every child. In addition, all schools charge fees so for many children, attendance is not an option due to limited funds at home.

Children who were orphaned by the AIDS pandemic had even less of a chance of attending school. To help combat this problem, the Peace House Academy was created in 2005. In addition to the traditional Tanzanian curriculum, Peace House Academy offers classes and training in business, entrepreneurship, and other areas designed to help graduates create jobs for themselves and others.

In a cooperative effort between Peace House Foundation, Minneapolis and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (Arusha Diocese), the 640-student boarding and secondary school was constructed on land donated by ELCT.
