Urbayiti Les Cayes - La Creole

Les Cayes, Haiti

Rock buildings with a crosswalk surrounded by lush trees and plant life

La Creole is on the eastern edge of the Grand Ravine du Sud in Les Cayes.  Before Hurricane Matthew, the ravine was bordered by gabions, but during the hurricane, portions of the gabions collapsed, causing constant flooding during the rainy season.  The gabions in need of treatment were approximately 250 linear meters and varied between 2 to 4.5 meters in height.

At the northern limit of the study area, there was an existing park that was also destroyed during Hurricane Matthew.  Though still used by the youth as a place to play basketball, the Plaza is unsafe for young children.  Meetings with local Community Leaders expressed a need to rebuild the Plaza into an active area for a neighborhood market and of course, restoration of the basketball court. Community leaders also requested that a new road be built along the path of the existing dirt road.  The road was planned to be paved and well-lit for the safety of the neighborhood.

Msaada developed plans to rebuild the plaza, stabilize the riverbanks, create a new access road and provide safe access to the river via a concrete slip where swimming and clothes washing could occur.
